Afrika 70 is credited with pioneering the Afrobeat genre by blending West African highlife with American funk, jazz, and Yoruba rhythms. The band was led by Fela Kuti. Serving as a political collective, Afrika 70 used extended grooves and prominent horn sections to address military corruption and social injustice in Nigeria. Their work, including albums such as “Zombie,” has been recognized as significant in global music history. The band dissolved in 1978 after internal disagreements.
