Six years after her debut, Seyi Shay returned with “Big Girl” in 2021. The album shifts away from trend-chasing pop toward 90s R&B nostalgia and soulful Afro-fusion. It is mainly about the growth that comes from navigating friendships, messy romances, career wins and losses, and everything that shapes you into a grown woman who knows what she wants.
The project, produced by Kel-P, features Yemi Alade on lead single “Pempe,” plus Wande Coal, Simi, and UK artist BackRoad Gee. The album balances introspective lyricism with raw personality and focuses on intimate storytelling over club anthems. Seyi Shay dedicated “Big Girl” to her mother and the late Sound Sultan, making it clear she’s done chasing trends and commercial pressure.
