Ycee dropped “The First Wave” on April 7, 2017, marking his debut project after years of dropping hit singles.
Released through Tinny Entertainment under Sony Music Entertainment Africa, the project showcased Ycee’s versatility beyond the street rapper image people initially had of him.
He brought in heavy hitters like Falz, Maleek Berry, Reekado Banks, Seyi Shay, Calibri, and KLY, Hitnaija, with production handled by a solid lineup such as Maleek Berry, Ganjabeats, Adey, Karma, Thai, and TwoSeven.
What’s interesting is how deliberate Ycee was about his audience. He wasn’t chasing the street crowd exclusively. All he wanted were university students and young professionals who appreciated rap with polish and sophistication. Tracks like “Don’t Need Bae” and “Need to Know” proved he could handle mature themes about relationships without losing his edge.
“The First Wave” wasn’t just a debut EP; it was Ycee establishing himself as an artist with range, vision, and staying power in Nigeria’s competitive music scene.
