Talented rapper, “Ice Prince,” kills three birds with this well planned track: “Roots.” The song begins as a brag about the rappers GOAT status in the industry, then metamorphoses into a rundown of his undeniable talent which has made haters believers. But the main point of the track comes in the second verse where he celebrates his home town, and expresses deep admiration for the town that made him.
[Verse 1 & Hook]
I see stars everywhere that I go,
That’s why you always see me with a permanent glow.
Black nigga with brown skin, melanin flow,
I’m such a king, I should have my neck covered in gold.
Reading my poetry has been the reason I hope,
Streets pay me respect, so I’m believing I’m GOAT.
All of a sudden, some of the dumbest lyrics I wrote
Turned out to be a favorite rapper’s favorite quote.
Back then we dealing with inferior complex,
Now we in the building with interior concepts.
Grew up in the city, every kid with a bomb vest,
But I dropped the bomb on a record like DJ Funk Flex.
Put my name on the map but I’m still on the conquest,
Trying to get a pass like a bill at the congress.
But fuck niggas never gave me shit from the onset,
Now they call me The Don like I ain’t the sunset.
[Chorus]
You know it’s all about the roots, all about the roots…
We’ll take it back to the roots.
All about the roots. We take it back to the roots
(Take it back, take it back…)
[Verse 2]
My people are black skin and brown sugar.
Go to Jos, there's no city or town cooler.
Super proud of the legacy and the heritage,
Love my peeps to my bone marrow's and cartilage.
You see a J-Town nigga, he ain’t no average.
E get why God put us for center for certain leg.
Woke up feeling like Masada, Alele!
Them carry me for head, them carry me dey do Hallele.
Hallelujah, Jehovah,
My city love me like Suya, I'm riding round in a scooter,
Smoking a pack of that Buddha
I pull up faster than Uber.
Lyrical Dr. Smith. Dr....
Game gals just came back and I’m slaying tracks,
The same cats from way back.
Still the main cast, the way I focus e be like sey I dey earn gat
[Chorus / Outro]
We’ll take it back to the roots, we’ll take it back.
(Take it back…)
We’ll take it back to the roots, we’ll take it back.
We’ll take it back to the roots — we’ll take it back.
(Take it back, take it back…)
